Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA)
The Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA), is the international network of IMA's from around the world.
There are 42 member countries represented on the FIMA Council from IMANA in North America, across the world to IMAQ in Queensland.
IMAQ has been a member since the FIMA AGM in Lebanon in 2010.
The FIMA network has several projects and does a phenomenal amount of relief work across the world.
There are 3 key projects:
There is also a significant amount of relief work including establishing local hospitals in several countries affected by natural disasters and war.
FIMA also publishes an annual yearbook and these are available online on the FIMA website.
FIMA also published regular newsletters which our secretary will distribute to our members.
IMAQ members met with IMA Cambodia at the FIMA Conference. The plight of the flood affected communities and the lack of adequate medical facilities became apparent at their presentation.
IMAC has requested assistance in any way possible and they have also officially extended an invitation to IMAQ and its members to volunteer our services and assist at their clinics.
At our IMAQ executive meeting in October 2012 the executive agreed to support their current Qurbani Project, as well as to get together a group of volunteers to visit and assist our colleagues in Cambodia early in 2013 in some of their clinics Insha-Allah.

- FIMA Save Vision Project - Established in 2005, several teams of eye surgeons have volunteered their time and expertise and conducted over 8 million opthalmology consultations in 15 countries through 415 camps. Over the last 8 years the team has performed 86 678 cataract surgeries. At the minimum cost for each operation of $100 each this equates to $ 8.66 million spent. The team also trains local surgeons in the countries to be able to perform the operations.
- FIMA Save Smile Project - This project has now been going for the past 3 years and corrects Cleft Lip and palate defects. In 2012 alone the team of plastic surgeons has performed 158 cleft lip surgeries in Sudan. In conjunction with Doctors World Wide team from Turkey they have performed 500 surgeries.
- FIMA Save Dignity Project - The team of surgeons provide their skill to perform Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) repairs. In 2012 in Darfour, Afghanistan and Mogadishu they have performed a total of 71 surgeries.

The annual FIMA Conference will take place in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa between the 19th to 23rd September 2013 Insha-Allah.

2012 FIMA Conference:
The 2012 Council Meeting and clinical conference was held in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia between the 11-15 September 2012.
IMAQ was represented at the council meeting by Drs. Mohammed Iqbal Sultan and Anwar Seedat, and were joined by Drs Anayatullah Khokhar & Yunus Solwa at the Clinical Conference.
Other than the update on FIMA projects and the clinical component of the conference, the networking with other colleagues from around the world and an update on the phenomenal work done is heartening.
The worlds first iPad / iPhone App on the care of the Muslim patient was launched at the 2012 FIMA Conference. This was a joint project between Elsevier Singapore and FIMA. You may download the App at the Appstore. The first 4 chapters are free.

2011 FIMA Conference:
The 2011 FIMA conference was held at Universitas Yarsi, in Jakarta Indonesia from the 13th till 18th September 2011.
IMAQ Executive members, Drs Mohammed Iqbal Sultan and Adel El-Mezin attended attended the conference in Jakarta, and we were accompanied by IMAQ members, Drs Mohammed Khateeb and Cassim Peer.
The Conference was well attended by representatives from the other FIMA members from almost 30 countries and gave us an excellent opportunity to network with and be privileged to see the excellent work done around the world by FIMA and our members organisations.
The clinical aid and relief aid work was truly amazing.
To date FIMA has provided examinations to over a million patients around the world, performed in excess of 81 000 cataract surgeries through its Save Vision Project, Cleft lip and Palate surgeries through the Save Smile Project, Vesico-vaginal and recto-vaginal fistula repairs.
In addition to clinical work, the humanitarian contribution from the relief work done in areas of natural disasters, famine, in Sudan, Somalia is mind blowing.
IMAQ has established networks to be able to provide volunteers for some of this relief work, be it 2-4 weeks in the horn of Africa or 2-3 days in Cambodia the opportunity to provide your services is most welcome.

2010 FIMA Conference:
The 2010 FIMA conference and AGM was held in September 2010 in Lebanon and IMAQ was invited to attend. IMAQ executive member, Dr Adel El-Mezin represented IMAQ at the conference and was well received and by all accounts left an indelible impression on the FIMA members at the conference.
Following the FIMA conference in Lebanon, one of the FIMA Executive members from Sudan Prof Mohamed El-Amin Ahmed visited the Gold Coast to present a paper at the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) conference and met with IMAQ President, Dr Mohammed Iqbal Sultan.
